Degrees Without Skills

A degree opens the door — it does not get you hired. We look at why paper credentials keep failing modern engineering interviews.

Walk into most campus placement drives and you will see the same pattern. Hundreds of résumés with strong CGPAs, familiar course titles, and the same list of languages — yet hiring managers leave saying they cannot find people who can actually build.

That is not a mystery. A three- or four-year CS degree still focuses heavily on exams, theory papers, and controlled lab work. You may pass Operating Systems and DBMS with flying colors and still freeze when asked to debug a failed production deploy or explain a trade-off between REST and event-driven design under real load.

Industry data has been pointing the same way for years. LinkedIn, Stack Overflow surveys, and hiring reports from mid-size product companies keep repeating a blunt message: graduates often know definitions, not delivery. They can recite what CI/CD is. Fewer have shipped a pipeline. They can name React hooks. Fewer have owned a messy feature end to end in someone else’s codebase.

The interview loop has adapted. Whiteboard algorithms still show up, but live coding on a half-broken repo, system design for a real product surface, and “tell me about something you deployed” are deciding rounds. A certificate does not pass those. Evidence does.

This gap hits hardest in markets flooded with graduates. When everyone has a degree, the degree stops differentiating. What separates candidates is proof of execution: Git history that shows collaboration, tickets closed under ambiguity, design docs that changed after feedback, and systems that survived users — not just viva questions.

None of this means college is useless. Foundations in discrete math, networks, and data structures still matter. The problem is the false comfort that a degree alone equals readiness. In 2026 hiring, readiness means shipping, communicating with product and design, reading logs at 11pm, and learning a tool before the documentation is perfect.
